Warm the Children

The Mary Lyon Foundation was very fortunate to be the recipient of warm clothing from the “Warm-the-Children” program this year.

It didn’t take long to fill our allotted openings, and we are very appreciative to be part of Warm-the-Children this year.

We would like to thank all the local businesses and volunteers, who have been fund-raising and working year round to make this wonderful program available to Franklin County children in need.

Pick-up for families approved through the Mary Lyon Foundation may pick-up their children’s clothing this Wednesday, September 17th, at their assigned time slot, at the Franklin County Fairgrounds, in the Dole Building.

If you have any questions, please call our office at 413-625-2555.

Events, Mini-Grants

Mini Grant funds author visit to Hawlemont

Trolley event

Children’s author Marie Betts Bartlett visited Hawlemont Regional Elementary School on Thursday. She read from her book, The Little Yellow Trolley Car, which is based on the story of the trolley that ran through Shelburne Falls from 1896 to 1927. Students who attended her presentation were in Hawlemont’s pre-K, kindergarden, and first and second grade classes. More information about Marie Betts Bartlett and her book can be found on her website.

Mary Boehmer, the Hawlemont librarian, received a Mini Grant from the Mary Lyon Foundation last fall to bring Bartlett to the school. A list of other Fall 2013 Mini Grant recipients is available here. Funding for Mini Grants comes from the foundation’s annual Community Spelling Bee, which is held each November at Mohawk Trail Regional School.

Spring Lyonnaise 2014

mlf2mlf3The annual Spring Lyonnaise sponsored by the Mary Lyon Foundation was held this year on Sunday afternoon, May 18 from 2-5 pm at the Shelburne Buckland Community Center on Main Street in Shelburne Falls. This free event, a celebration of excellence in local education, is open to the public. There was music, awards, raffle prizes, student exhibits and a presentation by the 2014 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year, Anne Marie Bettencourt. The very first Massachusetts Teacher of the Year was Roy Frude, a beloved Arms Academy science teacher. Awards were presented as follows:

Outstanding Mohawk Graduate Award – Kevin Hollister

Spirit of Adventure Award – Leslie and Eddie Grinnell

Business Award – Berkshire East

Career Award – John Sloan, former head of a division of Chrysler Corporation

Harper Gerry Student Assistance Fund

The Mary Lyon Foundation has recently provided eyeglasses, lunch money, food vouchers, warm winter clothing, prescriptions and other basic necessities for Mohawk students and their families. Grants from Brookfield Community Foundation, People’s Community Foundation and the
Cleveland Dodge Foundation as well as generous contributions and staff payroll deductions have maintained this important service.

Music Program

This year the Mary Lyon Foundation donated a very large gong to the music department at Mohawk. It will be used in a wide variety of presentations as well as sounding the end of each round in the annual Community Spelling Bee.

Ron Bailey, Guest Speaker

Sponsored by a pro-active grant from the Mary Lyon Foundation, President of the Black History Civil War Museum in Gettysburg, Ron Bailey was a charismatic guest speaker at an assembly program at Mohawk recently, also visiting classrooms and meeting with students. Erik Doty, close friend of the speaker, was instrumental in bringing him to our school. That evening the foundation sponsored a reception for Mr. Bailey and hopes to continue a close relationship with the museum.

Capital Campaign, Giving

Rowe Capital Campaign

Rowe Capital Campaign

After 6 successful past capital campaigns for the Heath, Colrain, Sanderson, BSE, Hawlemont and Mohawk schools in our district, the Mary Lyon Foundation in conjunction with The Friends of the Rowe School has launched a major capital campaign for the Rowe Elementary School which was hit by lightning and destroyed by fire in 2012. Although the insurance will pay for the building, funds are urgently needed for technology, the library, playground/physical education and creative arts.

Please send donations payable to the Mary Lyon Foundation with Rowe School in the memo line. You may designate your donation for one of the above areas. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Checks may be mailed to:
