Mary Lyon Foundation Updates

Remembering Marion Taylor

The Mary Lyon Foundation joins the West County community in remembering Marion Taylor, a founding member of the Foundation and a lifelong champion of local education and community life.

Marion devoted decades to strengthening the region she loved through her work with local schools and through her deep involvement in organizations including the Girl Scouts, Shelburne Grange, First Congregational Church, and the Bridge of Flowers.

“Marion’s dedication to her community was legendary,” said Susan Samoriski, founding executive director of the Mary Lyon Foundation. “She had a profound effect on every aspect of our community.”

Former Mohawk Trail Regional School District Superintendent Bruce Willard, who worked closely with Marion while she served as chair of the school committee, remembers her as both a trusted leader and a deeply connected community member. “She was absolutely a wonderful person to work with,” he said. “She knew so many different people and worked in so many organizations within the community. That was a tremendous advantage for the school district and everyone involved.”

Marion retired from the Mary Lyon Foundation Board of Trustees in June 2021 after 30 years of service. Later that year, the Marion and Gordon Taylor Endowment for Sustainability was established to help ensure the Foundation can continue supporting students where the need is greatest.

Those wishing to honor Marion’s legacy may consider making a gift to the Mary Lyon Foundation in her memory.
