Greenfield Savings Bank: A Pillar of Community Support and Partnership

Greenfield Savings Bank (GSB) has long been recognized for its commitment to supporting local nonprofits and contributing to the well-being of the communities it serves. Rooted deeply in Franklin and Hampshire Counties, GSB’s dedication to philanthropy comes from its status as a mutual financial institution, a model that prioritizes community prosperity over profit.

“We’ve been around for 156 years, and our success is tied to the community’s success,” explained Tara, Vice President of Business Development and Director of Philanthropy at GSB. “As a mutual bank, we are committed to reinvesting in our local community, unlike stock banks that focus on shareholders. This dedication to giving back is a huge part of who we are.”

GSB’s approach to giving goes beyond transactional donations. The bank focuses on building meaningful partnerships with local organizations to support programs that make a difference. Rather than just providing financial contributions, GSB actively engages in grassroots efforts, including initiatives like food drives and diaper collections. This collaborative mindset has been key to GSB’s success and reflects the core values of both the bank and the region it serves.

GSB has a long history with the Mary Lyon Foundation, particularly in its efforts to help students succeed and thrive. Through its involvement in the Campaign for Student Success, GSB is directly investing in an imitative that provides essential resources and educational opportunities students need. Tara voiced how proud the bank is to uphold this campaign, which aims to ensure that every child in the region has the tools and support to excel academically and beyond.

One of the most well-known Mary Lyon Foundation programs GSB is involved with is the Holiday Giving Tree, which GSB hosts at its Shelburne Falls branch. Each year, the Mary Lyon Foundation partners with GSB to spread holiday joy to the children of the Mohawk Trail Regional School District. Through the Foundation’s Holiday Giving Program, a tree is set up in the bank’s lobby, decorated with tags that list local children’s specific wishes and needs. Community members are invited to support a child by selecting a tag and purchasing gifts. These thoughtful donations are then collected and delivered to the home by the Foundation’s trustees, volunteers, and staff. For GSB, this initiative is about showing up for the community in a meaningful way and demonstrating that even small actions can have a significant impact. “We all have something to give, whether it’s time, resources, or connections,” Tara shared. “The Holiday Giving Tree is just one example of that.”

Mpress Nembhard, CRA Analyst and Community Outreach Officer at GSB, emphasizes the importance of GSB’s community engagement. “At Greenfield Savings Bank, we believe in building strong relationships with the communities we serve. Our goal is not just to donate, but to be actively involved in ways that contribute to real change. Supporting organizations like the Mary Lyon Foundation is a testament to that commitment—it’s about showing up for our neighbors and making a tangible difference in their lives.”

In addition to monetary donations, GSB believes businesses must take an active role in nurturing nonprofits. Tara explained that businesses, especially for-profit companies, have a responsibility to advocate for community organizations that are doing vital, lifesaving work. Corporate philanthropy is about more than just donating funds; it’s about building partnerships that amplify the work of nonprofits. This approach strengthens our community, benefiting businesses, nonprofits, and the individuals and families they serve.

Tara shared that one of the true rewards of corporate philanthropy is the sense of pride and fulfillment that comes from knowing that energy dedicated to nonprofits like the Mary Lyon Foundation is used to uplift and empower members of our community. GSB encourages other businesses to embrace philanthropy in their own ways, whether through financial contributions or volunteering. “Philanthropy is not just about displaying a big check. It’s about showing up and offering your time, talents, and resources,” Tara said. “Even small actions can create a ripple effect, and when businesses get involved, it sets an example for others to follow.”

As Greenfield Savings Bank continues its journey of giving back, it serves as a reminder of the profound impact collaboration and community involvement can have on local lives. Whether through their support of the Campaign for Student Success, the Holiday Giving Tree, or countless other initiatives, GSB proves that every effort—big or small—creates a wave of positive change. Tara emphasized that while businesses can help drive economic growth, nonprofits like the Mary Lyon Foundation step in to fill the crucial societal gaps, offering assistance and resources that so many depend on. By working together, businesses, nonprofits, and individuals can strengthen the very fabric of our community, ensuring a brighter future for all. In the end, the collective spirit of giving and collaboration makes this community not only a great place to live but a great place to make a difference.
