Mentorship and Inspiration: Pursuing Passion with Support

Andrew Doty’s formative years at the Mohawk Trail Regional School District launched a passion for helping others, eventually leading him to medical school. Shaped by the guidance of his mentors and the support of his school community, his experiences set him on a path to making a meaningful impact in the medical field. As a graduate of MTRHS and the recipient of the Dr. Tanja Davin Memorial Scholarship, Andrew’s commitment to his calling continues to drive his efforts to make a difference in the lives of others.

After graduating from Mohawk, Andrew moved to New York City to pursue acting and screenwriting, but he soon learned the film industry wasn’t a financially viable option. He moved back home to attend Greenfield Community College until a severe brain injury suddenly altered the trajectory of his life.  Andrew fought an intense hidden struggle throughout his recovery, and he became acutely aware of the silent battles others face. This personal experience ignited his determination to pursue a career in medicine, with the goal of helping others grappling with unseen challenges. Andrew switched his major to neuroscience and headed south to The College of William & Mary in Virginia.

Andrew completed his undergraduate studies and now attends the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville. The support from the Dr. Tanja Davin Memorial Scholarship through the Mary Lyon Foundation has been instrumental in Andrew’s continued access to education. Always gracious, Andrew says, “This scholarship has given me the ability to pursue my education with a sense of safety and stability, allowing me to concentrate on my four-year journey without having to scramble for basic necessities.”

The prospect of pursuing a career in neuroscience was intimidating. The career typically follows one of two primary pathways, research or practicing medicine, and initially Andrew wasn’t sure which to pursue. Despite the hurdles, Andrew’s determination to follow his passions guided him. “I had lived my life up to that point in such a way where I had chosen to pursue things I was passionate about to find out what gave me meaning,” he explains. Andrew discovered that being a physician is akin to being a teacher and a mentor, and he decided he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the dedicated educators from MTRHS who had a profound impact on his life.

Inspired by his experiences and the support he received, Andrew plans to give back to his community by creating a scholarship foundation that will complement the Dr. Tanja Davin Memorial Scholarship. Andrew is already giving back where he can. He recently created an oil painting depicting the internal struggles of patients with brain injuries that will be raffled off at a national neurosurgery conference, with proceeds going toward supporting aspiring medical students.

In his studies, a neurosurgeon advised him to never lose sight of balancing professional ambition with personal life. The neurosurgeon emphasized that by stepping away from your studies to live life, you’ll start to understand the stakes a patient faces when they’re at risk of losing everything dear to them. He realized that becoming a compassionate physician required more than academic excellence; it involved understanding life beyond textbooks. Moments of guidance and care like this have left a lasting impression and reinforced the mentorship he had experienced earlier at MTRHS.

For high school students aspiring to enter the medical field, Andrew offers his own invaluable advice: “Don’t wait for permission to pursue your dreams. Often, people remain in a state of hesitation, waiting for a sign to move forward. But sometimes, there isn’t one. I realized avoiding something just because it’s challenging would lead to an unfulfilling story. Amazing things often come from pushing through our fears and uncertainties.”

Andrew Doty’s story is a compelling example of how personal experiences, resilience, and community support can shape a remarkable career. His journey from Mohawk Trail Regional School to medical school underscores the transformative impact of pursuing one’s passions.

Andrew is grateful to his West County community for the mentorship and scholarship that have changed his life and will allow him to support future generations. As Andrew continues his medical education, he carries the lessons learned from his countless experiences and mentors, inspiring others to follow their paths with courage and determination.
