A Legacy of Learning: The Liz LeBaron Memorial Scholarship

Years ago, educator Liz LeBaron led a group of students on a bicycle trip to Walden Pond, where they explored the natural surroundings and wrote poetry inspired by what they experienced. The project brought reading and writing beyond the classroom and into the world around them. It became such a meaningful part of her teaching that Wayland Middle School continued the tradition even after she retired.

The trip reflected Liz’s belief that students, especially those who struggled in traditional classroom settings, deserved opportunities to experience reading and writing in ways that felt connected to the world around them. As a longtime reading specialist who later worked in special education and with English language learners, she devoted her career to helping students approach challenging skills with greater confidence.

Today, Liz’s commitment to education is reflected in the Liz LeBaron Memorial Scholarship. Established by her grandson and his wife, the scholarship is reserved for students who plan to study education. The couple created it in her honor to support students preparing for careers in the field that meant so much to her.

Liz brought creativity, patience, and compassion to her work, helping students recognize their abilities and reach their potential. Her influence extended far beyond the lessons she taught, leaving students with greater confidence in themselves and their capacity to learn.

Her commitment to others also extended beyond the classroom. Liz served as Membership Chair of the League of Women Voters, mentored others, and shared a love of music that remains woven throughout her family today. She also treasured time in nature, particularly at the family’s lake house, where books lined the shelves and days included dedicated reading time and opportunities to explore the outdoors.

The lake house became a gathering place where Liz’s values were part of everyday family life. Her appreciation for reading, learning, nature, and helping others shaped the experiences shared there and left an impression that continues to influence those who knew her.

Through the Liz LeBaron Memorial Scholarship, Liz’s values continue to reach beyond the students she taught and inspire a new generation. Each recipient becomes part of that legacy, carrying forward her commitment to helping others recognize their abilities, build confidence, and reach their potential.
